having a lovely time going nowhere (2010)

Wood, copper and bronze
ArtsCape – Byron Bay, July 2010

This work was shown in ArtsCape – Byron Bay, July 2010.  It’s a part of the world I’ve had a strong connection with through parts of my life, so it was wonderful to exhibit there.

I made the work specifically for ArtsCape, with a strong intention to integrate it with that environment. I surprised myself by returning to wood – a material I used to love but hadn’t really touched since 2005. The last five years have been metal years for me, so there was a fair bit of re-sharpening of the wood tools. I’ve always been interested in the process of traditional wooden boat building, and the resultant forms.

This work enables me to explore that in detail, and to develop a more organic language in my materials, process and integration with landscape.

50cm H  by 240cm W by 100cm D each boat – overall work approx 6 metres high.
