Cocktail mixing vessel and stirrer

Tombak, sterling silver and ebony.

Hand raised using traditional silver smithing techniques.

Tombak is a lovely metal. It’s a copper alloy, similar to gilding metal and some of the bronzes. To make a vessel like this you start out with a flat sheet of metal, and make a stake, which you hammer the metal against to produce the shape. All of the work is done with a hammer. That’s the only tool you use right up until the final finishing process. Even a small vessel like this is the result of literally tens of thousands of individual hammer blows.
